Vintage 1940s dancing Ballerina earrings set in sterling silver by Italian jewellery designer Joe Calafato. The earrings were originally brooches converted into drop earrings. On the back of the earrings it has two hand engravings saying 'Marlene' and 'Maurice'.
The earrings have the makers mark 'STER SILV' 'CANDIDA', this mark was used from 1947-1951.
Sicilian born Joe Calafato, designed and manufactured jewellery in Pretoria, South Africa for 20 years. Joe used the makers mark 'Candida' and became a prolific designer in South Africa known as the 'King of Silver'.
