ABOUT THE CAMEO SHELL
Most cameos are made from the Carnelian Shell which is a fast-growing Helmet Shell. The Carnelian has a pink background and a creamy white and pink relief. The Sardonyx is a much slower growing shell, and it is also thicker with a dark brown background and a white relief.
The Sardonyx shell is highly desired as it is excellent to carve, and allows craftsmen to easily display images due to the contrasting white colouring on the dark brown.
